Mother's Day Hatch Edition. Love Your Mother Nature Too!

PictureAny day out on the river with your dog is worth savoring. Fezzik really is the best river buddy a guy could ask for.
"Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans."
- Evo Morales

The temperatures have started to rise and with it the oportunity to try and tempt a trout waking from the deep cold waters. I have been out now a few times this spring season and have had mostly good days. There is a time in the spring where some of us have to remember again how to cast with accuracy and keep our mind to the tree tops around us as we cast. Usually a few trips out and a handful of lost flies is the norm as we return to the waters. It is exciting to be out on the streams again for sure.

Spring is a reminder of the life that nature provides the earth. We are all here as part of the process of life. Like teenage offspring though we get cocky and think we know everything that is good for us.  Mother Earth is a strict parent who when not listened to or appreciated, she will remind you who is boss. She quickly shows us the lessons of consequences for our actions. Will we ever mature enough to remember to take care of our mother Gaia the way that we should?

I pushed this monthly edition to Mother's Day not so much with intent but through dumb luck and necessity.  My life got real busy the last 3-4 weeks and I am reminded that I have a tendency to sometimes take on more than I should. My practice of keeping my projects to a reasonable minimum continues.

The release date for this post is Mother's Day in the USA. A hallmark holiday for sure but one that we would have probably come up with without it.  I like to think of it as a day to appreciate all things maternal. We sometimes forget the idea of the "Original Mother." She is a concept that we don't appreciate. So for this Mother's Day I am going to take some time to appreciate her and I hope you will too. Remember that without Her we would not not be here at all.

Don't forget to honor your own mother as well, call her, send a card or a gift? Then take a few minutes to explore this months "hatch" of features.

A wonderful video flashback I found to help remind you of the basics and get you in the mood to become a master of your own tenkara. This video was prooduced by Tenkara USA back in early days. It features  Dr. Hisao Ishigaki and Sakakibara Masami giving some great instructions and basics of tenkara.

PATH NOTES
Strings and sailing wax.. and all that fancy stuff? Making flies with unconventional and found materials. Who says you have to spend a lot of money on fly tying materials? There is stuff all around us that we can tie a fly up with.

FEATURED ANGLER
Easily one of the most prolific writers on tenkara, Jason Klass is this month's featured angler. We have been friends for a long time through thick, thin, the good bad and the ugly. I consider him the Hunter S. Thompson of tenkara. In part because of his resemblance but mostly because of the volumes of written work he has put out. He is a real pioneer in promoting tenkara in the west. Now with a Podcast too!

TENKARA AS PRACTICE
With some help with a poem from Maya Angelou, I touch also on my own thoughts on the idea of motherhood. We all have our own personal relationship with the idea of motherhood.

TIE THIS!
I have had so much fun tying this fly lately. It was created by my good friend Karel Lansky. You will enjoy tying up this "Red Butt Kebari." In addition to the recipe we have video that really shows you some finesse in Karel's approach to tying kebari.
