Austria is a trip that you really must put on your bucket list. I was joined by Karel Lansky, a veteran of fishing this area, who was an excellent activities director, guide and insider. The trip was made even more special with David West-Beale joining us. David and I hit it off swimmingly and I now consider him a good friend. He kept us, laughing and gave me much to think about with his philosophy on tenkara fishing. We all met up in London at the airport and then flew to Munich where they lost my bags.. more on that soon. From there we rented a car and drove to Mittersill, Austria where we stayed at the Braurup hotel and brewery. (Yes, hotel AND brewery!) Just a fabulous place to come home to every day and enjoy the evenings. The food was amazing, the hotel was a huge value and we had access to some of the best alpine fishing in Austria. Time went by so fast and as much as I would like to write a full trip review, for now you will have to just enjoy vicariously the adventure in the slideshow below. As mentioned, the trip had the challenge of my lost my luggage and I found myself with just enough to get by. Yes, I had to go pretty minimal. Challenges are merely lessons for us to grow from though right? At the very least they let us look at ourselves, learn, and maybe write a few blog posts about our experience. This was not going to ruin my trip and frankly, it didn't. With the help and support of friends, I was able to hold it together and make the most of the trip. So, in this month's offerings, I will share some tips in PATH NOTES on preventing packing catastrophes when traveling away from home to fish. We also meet David West-Beal as the "FEATURED ANGLER". Take a moment to contemplate in TENKARA AS PRACTICE as I visit the practice of "Acceptance of the Moments" and check out a fantastic fly pattern in "TIE THIS!" by featured tyer, Chuck Kaminski. Autumn could easily be the busiest time to go fishing. I know for me it is a question of how far into October can I get before it gets to be "that time" to settle back in for the winter. For me, this year will have the fondest memories of fishing the beautiful rolling hillsides of Austria. Where ever you are.. be sure to get out and enjoy the season.
